What is included and not included in the tour price?

Please see the tour page for more information.

Can you help me with accommodation before or after my tour?

Yes. We will be happy to help book accommodation before or after your tour. We can help with accommodation, transportation, and with the planning of your extra time, either guided or unguided.

Can you cater for special diets?

We encourage clients to sample the full range of food provided by the inns on our tours whenever possible. The inns are proud of their set menus, which usually consist of a multitude of carefully-balanced and painstakingly-produced dishes. If you are travelling with others, you can easily swap dishes between you at mealtimes so that each member of your party eats what they like best.   Inns are usually happy to provide meat-free meals if we request them at the time of booking. We can also request meals which are meat-free and without fish and seafood, though fish and seafood feature heavily in the standard Japanese diet. If requesting meals without fish and seafood, please tell us if you can still accept soups and sauces containing the traditional fish stock called dashi. It is hard for the inns to produce meals without dashi and choices for vegans are limited.   For those with an allergy to wheat gluten, eating in Japan can be problematic. Soy sauce and miso (used in miso soup) contain gluten. While tofu does not contain gluten, it often is served with soy sauce.
Many inns will do their best to cater for special diets, but please submit requests tobelocal at the time of booking. It may not be possible to accommodate requests made afterwards. Please understand that some smaller inns may not have the facilities necessary to cook for those with special diets.

What is the standard of accommodation?

Accommodation can vary on belocal tours, from unique rental properties with local character, to Western-style hotels with en suite facilities. In the countryside we use traditional ryokan or minshuku, with futons laid-out on tatami-mat floors. Single travellers may be asked to share a room (same sex) and en suite facilities may not be available.

Do you offer single occupancy rooms?

Our pricing is based on per person rates, but please note that you can share and save - if there are 2, 3, 4 or more people in your party, you save! Please let us know if the members if your group would be happy to share a room together.

Are there any local payments?

There are no local payments, but you will need some cash to cover expenses that are not included in the tour, such as select meals or local transportation costs. Please see the tour notes for each tour or ask us.

What type of trips do you offer?

We offer independent multi-day tour packages that allow you enjoy the best local experiences around Japan.

Do I need insurance?

It is condition of travelling with us that you have insurance to cover your medical expenses in Japan. We also highly recommend that you purchase insurance to cover the cancellation or curtailment of your trip (you would then be reimbursed for any cancellation charges), loss of personal effects, and liability.

How much money should I bring?

Cash is king in Japan, and it is important to have enough cash to see you through your trip. Please do not rely on bringing your credit or debit card with you, as only a very few Japanese ATMs (cash machines) work with them. Normal Japanese bank ATMs do not accept foreign cards.

Once you leave Tokyo or Kyoto (or other large cities) there may be no place to exchange foreign cash or use your card.  We recommend bringing about JPY5,000 per day, per person. You will probably need less in rural areas, but it is best to be prepared.

What should I bring?

We will send you a detailed dossier with a complete list of things to bring with you.

What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept payment by:

Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) in Australian Dollars, Canadian Dollars,Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars

Debit cards (Visa debit, Visa Electron, UK issued Maestro & Solo)

Bank transfers in Australian Dollars, Canadian Dollars,Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars
